COACHES AND QUARTERBACKS – AFC WEST
Both high
profile, and arguably the most important components of a successful football
team. More credit and blame than they deserve? Probably. I’ve gone back 50
years and chose only one of each as the greatest for selected teams. Some were
easy choices, others not so easy.
DENVER BRONCOS
Coach: Mike Shanahan
Dan Reeves next,
then Red Miller.
Quarterback: John Elway
Manning would
have to play about five more good years to catch Elway as a Bronco.
SAN DIEGO
CHARGERS
Coach: Don Coryell
Seems strange
that I would choose Coryell for two separate teams. But that
speaks as much to Coryell’s competition as it does to his greatness.
Quarterback: Dan Fouts
Fouts is the
clear choice, but Hadl wasn’t bad and Rivers is making a name for himself.
OAKLAND RAIDERS
Coach: John Madden
Flores should
probably be considered close to Madden’s equal. But Madden’s personality has
made him somewhat iconic.
Quarterback: Ken Stabler
Stabler was one
of my favorites so I’m partial. But it doesn’t matter. I’d have to go all the
way back to Lamonica to find someone comparable. Although Plunkett did some
great things for this franchise.
KANSAS CITY
CHIEFS
Coach: Hank Stram
Schottenheimer
has the better percentage but he was a nerd.
Quarterback: Len Dawson
Dawson was good.
Could be called great, but doesn’t need to be to get the nod here. “Good” is
enough to get top billing among the choices for this franchise.
