COACHES AND QUARTERBACKS – AFC SOUTH
Both high
profile, and arguably the most important components of a successful football
team. More credit and blame than they deserve? Probably. I’ve gone back 50
years and chose only one of each as the greatest for selected teams. Some were
easy choices, others not so easy.
TENNESSEE
TITANS
Coach: Bum Phillips
Phillips goes
back to the days when the franchise was in Houston as the Oilers. Jeff Fisher is a
close second here.
Quarterback: Warren Moon
McNair and
Pastorini get honorable mention.
HOUSTON TEXANS
Coach: Gary Kubiak
Such a young and
unsuccessful franchise that Kubiak gets the nod based on longevity.
Quarterback: Matt Schaub
For the same reasons
as Kubiak
JACKSONVILLE
JAGUARS
Coach: Tom Coughlin
Who else? Not Del
Rio.
Quarterback: Mark Brunnell
Another
relatively young franchise so Brunnell doesn’t have much competition here.
INDIANAPOLIS
COLTS
Coach: Tony Dungy
We can only count
5 of Shula’s seasons under this category, but still a close call.
Quarterback: Johnny Unitas
Unitas goes back
to the days when the franchise was in Baltimore. Obviously a very good case
could be made for Peyton Manning. And although injuries derailed his career,
Bert Jones was bad-ass. Helluva list of QB’s here.
